Two police officers have saved the lives of three people who were trapped in a burning car wreck in Melbourne's south.

The car slammed into a building at Moorabbin and burst into flames on Fryers Road about 5:30am today.

The police officers, who were in the area at the time, pulled three people out of the burning wreck.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade's Tony McCarthy says the injured owe their lives to the officers.

"It's lucky for these people driving the car that the police were right behind them at the time," he said.

"It appears the driver was slumped into the floor well of the car unconscious.

"The police have definitely saved these people's lives.

"As soon as the accident occurred, the police were rescuing the people out of the car as the car burst into flames."

A man and two women have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The two officers have been treated for minor injuries.
