A family have returned to their western Sydney home to be confronted by a balaclava-clad man in their child's bedroom.

A seven-year-old boy was with his mother and a 33-year-old man when they entered the property at Pendle Hill at about 11.20pm (AEDT) on Saturday to find the man in the boy's bedroom.

The 33-year-old man and the intruder got into an altercation before he fled the scene with another man who had been outside the home.

The male homeowner suffered a hand injury caused by what police believe may have been a screwdriver.

Police are investigating the incident and say it's possible the it was domestic-violence related.
