Farmers in Tasmania's Derwent Valley who lost stock and pastures in the January bushfires are now eligible for Commonwealth assistance.

The Central Highlands Council has been lobbying the Federal Government to help Ellendale farmers who missed out on the first round of grants.

Mayor Deirdre Flint says she is delighted that farmers affected by the Lake Repulse fire can now apply for up to $25,000 to help with the clean up.

"Of course in some cases the disposing of the dead livestock, that's already happened because the fire broke out what four weeks ago but it's better to get it now rather than not get it at all," she said.
