Mayor seeks tax breaks for western Qld

A western Queensland mayor says he will write to shadow treasurer Joe Hockey to push for tax incentives for the region.

The Federal Opposition is considering a discussion paper focused on growing the populations of Cairns, Townsville, Darwin and Karratha.

Tax incentives are suggested as a way to encourage people to move north.

Bulloo Mayor John Ferguson says federal Labor recently rejected a local study into tax relief, so he will take it to the Opposition instead.

"I think it's a great thing ... to get people to spread out a bit more in Australia because most of them live on the coast because that's where the good times are but ... there's a lot of good times in the bush too if people just take the time to come out and have a look," he said.

"We don't get the same benefits as people do on the coast.

"We don't get the public transports, we don't get the big shopping centres and people say, 'well you live there that's [what you] put up [with]' with it but that's not the idea, the idea is we're all part of Australia so that's why we put it to the Government for a different tax zone."
