The Tasmanian Government has indicated it will provide some public money to help save the West Coast Wilderness Railway.

The commitment came at a public meeting in Queenstown, where more than 200 people gathered to question government ministers about what they are doing to ensure the tourist attraction is not lost.

The Infrastructure Minister, David O'Byrne, told the meeting some taxpayers' funds would be spent to prevent the closure of the railway when its operator, the Federal Group, walks away in April.

But he says the Government will need help from the Federal Government.
