Dubai's leader has agreed to look into the case of two Australian businessmen who have been languishing in his country for more than four years.
Mr Joyce and Mr Lee were arrested on bribery charges in January 2009 based on discredited allegations by Gold Coast property developer Sunland.
The charges were dismissed in the Victorian Supreme Court last year but the pair still face a lengthy prison term if a Dubai court finds them guilty.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr says Ms Gillard pressed their case very strongly. But he indicated the Dubai leader's response was non-committal.
Senator Carr says the government is working hard to ensure the UAE is aware of the Victorian judgement.
Sunland is appealing the Victorian ruling.
