Employment Minister Grace Portolesi said more South Australians were in jobs last month despite a rise in the state's unemployment rate.

It rose 0.3 per cent to 6.1 per cent for January, seasonally-adjusted, compared with a national unemployment rate which was steady at 5.4 per cent.

Ms Portolesi said total employment in SA increased by about 1,100 jobs in January.

"Clearly we are disappointed about this month's figures, but I think what we've seen for the last five months is more than 5,000 jobs, new jobs created, I think that's a good sign," she said.

"The good news is that the participation rate in trend terms is also going up and that rate has risen for the fourth consecutive month.

"That tends to be an indicator of confidence, so that's a good sign."
