The independent Member for Gaven is calling on the Queensland Government to suspend plans for a Commonwealth Games athletes' village at Parklands.

In April the Government will seek expressions of interest from developers keen to build the facility for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

But MP Alex Douglas says the funds should be spent in flood-devastated parts of Queensland instead.

He says the State Government should examine its priorities.

"You can't cry poor and you can't deprive people who are generating income for the State and then say we are going to put on a big party in five years and we are going to divert scarce resources for it when they urgently require those resources now," he said.

Dr Douglas says the money should be spent on flood-proofing and rebuilding parts of Queensland devastated by last month's floods.

He says the Government should consider using existing facilities for the athletes' village.

"I think Bond University would be ideal because it has so much residential accommodation," he said.

"It would be entirely suitable and we should work that out as a matter of urgency as well but at the same time we could be diverting all those resources.

"It is wrong to spend it in local areas at this time when the urgent need is to the north of us."
