How the major US stock markets fared Tuesday

Stocks rebounded Tuesday after a sell-off Monday. A report that showed the housing recovery remained on track and strong company earnings helped push the market higher. The Dow recovered a large portion of the losses from Monday's drop, trading back above 14,000 during the day. The rally eased in the last hour of trading.

The Dow closed up 99.22 points, or 0.7 percent, at 13,979.30.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 15.58 points, or 1 percent, to 1,511.29.

The Nasdaq composite index added 40.41 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,171.58.

For the week:

The Dow is down 30.49 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 1.88 points, or 0.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 7.52 points, or 0.2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 875.16 points, or 6.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 85.10 points, or 6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 152.07 points, or 5 percent.
