A total fire ban is in place for the northern and southern Riverina districts in NSW on Thursday.

Temperatures are expected to reach 37 degrees in the southern Riverina, with wind gusts of 50km/h predicted.

The ban applies to the Berrigan, Conargo, Corowa, Deniliquin, Jerilderie, Murray, Urana and Wakool councils, the Rural Fire Service says.

In the northern Riverina, temperatures are forecast to hit 38 degrees with 50km/h winds.

The ban applies to the Carrathool, Griffith, Hay, Leeton, Murrumbidgee and Narrandera councils.

A Rural Fire Service spokesman said the fire risk was not expected to ease on Friday.
