Greens criticise Manus toilet facilities

Published: 05:11:23 AM, Wed 06 February 2013 UTC

Toilet cubicles without doors are among some of the indignities asylum seekers face at Australia's offshore processing centre on Manus Island, the Greens say.

During Senate question time, Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young recounted her recent trip to the Papua New Guinean island and asked why her mobile phone and camera were confiscated.

"That meant we were not able to take photos of the toilets without doors on them," Senator Hanson-Young told the upper house on Wednesday.

She also noted the children's play area had shards of glass sticking out of the grass.

Senator Hanson-Young asked the Labor government what it had to hide by banning photographs.

Labor frontbencher Kate Lundy said the government had nothing to hide.

"We are not breaching any international law or human rights obligations," Senator Lundy said.

"The government has nothing to hide."

Senator Lundy said the government was committed to ensuring processing centre detainees were "treated with dignity and respect."

Senator Hanson-Young asked: Under what definition of dignity and respect, does not having toilet doors on the cubicles of detention centres, does that fall?"

Senator Lundy said she rejected the imputations of the question.
