Arson squad heads to Northam after fires
Arson squad detectives are in Northam, about 100km northeast of Perth, to investigate a string of scrub fires that started along WA's Great Eastern Highway on Tuesday.
Early on Wednesday, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) downgraded a watch and act warning for the western part of Northam to a bushfire advice.
The blaze started near the intersection of Great Eastern Highway and Mitchell Avenue and was burning on both sides of the highway near the Yongah Hill Immigration Detention Centre but is now under control.
Four Bush Fire Service firefighters are mopping up and will monitor the area throughout the day.
The cause of the fire is suspicious, the DFES says.
People are asked to report any unusual behaviour in the area to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
