The Greens are pushing the Victorian Government to back legislation which would give firefighters easier access to compensation if they contract cancer.

The legislation will be introduced into State Parliament today.

The legislation will make it easier for firefighters, who contract any one of 12 cancers commonly linked to their work, to seek compensation.

Greens MP Colleen Hartland says Labor MPs have indicated they will support the legislation. But the Government's position is unclear.

She says she will meet again today with staff from the office of the Emergency Services Minister, Peter Ryan.

"We'll be outlining the fact that we believe that it is really important for the Government to support firefighters, both career and volunteer," she said.

"This is an issue that should be beyond party politics."
