A learner driver with four teenage passengers onboard has allegedly been caught travelling 90km/h above the speed limit.

Police noticed the driver when he sped from an intersection at Hoppers Crossing, in Melbourne's west, around 10.15pm on Tuesday.

The car reached a speed of 160km/h in a 70km/h zone before it was intercepted, police say.

The 20-year-old Sunshine North driver was carrying four passengers aged 17 to 19.

His car was impounded for 30 days and he is expected to be charged on summons with speeding and failing to comply with conditions of permit.
