A British man, Anthony Prestidge, has gone on trial in the Supreme Court in Perth accused of wilfully murdering his brother-in-law more than 10 years ago.

The body of Andy Ball, 24, was found at his Ellenbrook home in September 2002.

He had been bashed over the head.

The court was told that the last man to see him alive was his wife's brother, Prestidge, who has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors say Mr Ball also told friends that he had been receiving threats and that if anything happened to him, it was his brother-in-law who was responsible.

The court heard that not long after the alleged murder Prestidge fled to Bali.

His lawyer told the court that while her client does admit he was involved in an incident, he maintains he acted in self defence because Mr Ball came at him with a knife.

The trial is set down three weeks.
