Katter party faces Senate dilemma

Katter's Australian Party will decide in the next few weeks whether to give up a seat in Queensland Parliament to have a shot at boosting its team for the Senate.

Former Liberal National MP Ray Hopper is one of the three Katter Party members in State Parliament, but the Member for Condamine wants to run for the Senate.

He would have to quit his seat before the federal election in September.

"You could have a by-election on election day," he said.

"There'd be no extra cost to the state."

The Katter Party's executive will meet next week to discuss its Senate preselection plans.

Bob Katter says Mr Hopper is well regarded.

"We love him where he is and the people love him where he is," he said.

"But he feels he can do the job for those people and do a bigger job as well."

It will be a tough call for the fledgling party to give up a guaranteed seat in Brisbane for the chance of a spot in Canberra.
