Health officials from Townsville will appear before a parliamentary inquiry today to talk about the north Queensland's city's palliative care services.

The State Government has asked the Health and Community Services Committee to look at improving coordination between health groups.

Dr Will Cairns from the Townsville Hospital will appear at the hearing.

He says palliative care needs to be discussed by authorities and the community.

"For every person in the community there will come a time where we need to focus on comfort and quality of life and life prolonging measures won't be appropriate, so it's something all health services will have to deal [with] and I think there's a growing awareness in the community, more discussions in the media," he said.

Dr Cairns says it will be an opportunity for the committee to find out more about how regional services operate.

"They could get some good lessons about how palliative care services can be developed and how it is such an important part of a community," he said.

"I think it's important for members for a community, members of the community that they'll be continued to look after for the entirety of their life."
