A former music teacher at a Perth private boys school is on trial accused of sexually abusing one of his students.

Lindsay Hutchinson is alleged to have repeatedly molested the boy in 1984 and 1985, when the student was aged between 13 and 14.

In an opening address, prosecutors told the District Court the abuse happened at various locations.

They allegedly included hotel rooms in country towns when the students were touring and in the Deanery of Saint Georges Cathedral in the city, where Hutchinson was the organist.

Hutchinson has admitted indecently touching the student but denies the more serious allegations of abuse made against him.

The trial is set down for three weeks.
