About 380 former employees of the collapsed timber company Gunns are due to start work today with their new employer.

In December, the Sydney-based company New Forests announced it was buying Gunns' softwood sawmills at Bell Bay in Tasmania and Tarpeena, in South Australia.

It also said it would buy the collapsed Tasmanian company's distribution businesses in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

Today, the company will begin trading under the new name Timberlink Australia.

Spokesman David Brand says workers will not notice much difference.

"[There's] no great change. We'll have the new name, new identity, the same business as usual."

Mr Brand says the company will make money.

"We've got difficult trading conditions, our goal is to go to business and be ready when the market recovers."

Timberlink will be headed by Melbourne-based CEO, Ian Tyson.
