The operators of the Darwin to Adelaide Railway say The Ghan is back on track after derailing near Katherine.

Two carriages came off the tracks yesterday but no-one on board was injured and all 193 passengers spent the night on the train.

There were no injuries reported and all passengers are safe.

The Ghan left Katherine early this morning and is due into Alice Springs after 5pm today.

The company is investigating what caused the derailment.

Katherine Police say the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will also be looking for the cause of the accident.
