VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

A MAJOR STUDY THAT LOOKED AT TEN YEARS OF FIGURES ON FOOD POISONING IN THE U.S. HAS FOUND THAT LEAFY GREENS LIKE LETTUCE AND SPINACH ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM.

BUT EXPERTS SAY THE STUDY -- WHICH WAS DONE BY THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL -- SHOULDN'T DISCOURAGE CONSUMERS FROM EATING PRODUCE.

SOUNDBITE: Dr. Patricia Griffin, Researcher, Centers For Disease Control and Prevention:

"We eat a lot of produce items and most of our meals are very, very safe."

THE REPORT LOOKED AT THE SOURCES OF FOOD POISONING FROM 1998 TO 2008.

AMONG THE FINDINGS.

EACH YEAR, ROUGHLY 48 MILLION AMERICANS -- 1 IN 6 -- GET SICK FROM FOOD POISONING -- WITH HOSPITALIZATIONS TOTALING ABOUT 128 THOUSAND -- AND ABOUT 3000 DEATHS.

IT ALSO FOUND ABOUT 1 IN 5 ILLNESSES LINKED TO LEAFY GREEN VEGETABLES -- MORE THAN ANY OTHER TYPE OF FOOD.

BUT THE CDC SAYS CONTAMINATED VEGETABLES HASN'T CAUSED AS MANY DEATHS AS CONTAMINATED POULTRY.

SOUNDBITE: Dr. Patricia Griffin, Researcher, Centers For Disease Control and Prevention:

"And people can protect themselves from illness from meat and poultry in several ways. One is just make sure that you cook your meat and poultry well because that's going to keep kill any germs that could make you sick. Also make sure that when you bring meat and poultry that's raw into your home it doesn't cross-contaminate other things."

RED MEAT WAS ONCE SEEN AS A LEADING SOURCE OF FOOD POISONING.

BUT THE CDC SAYS IT'S NOW RESPONSIBLE FOR ONLY ABOUT 7 PERCENT OF ILLNESSES....AND FEWER THAN FOUR PERCENT OF DEATHS DUE TO FOOD POISONING.

THE REASON?

EXPERTS SAY THERE HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN THE HANDLING OF BEEF.
