A Seeing Eye Dog has been stretchered out of a shopping centre in Sydney's CBD after injuring his paw on an escalator.

The black labrador got his paw stuck in a building on the corner of George and Park Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The dog, called Gidgit, was so badly injured he wouldn't move, the Ambulance Service of NSW said in a statement.

His owner was also stranded until the dog could be treated.

Paramedics loaded Gidgit on a stretcher and they took the pup and his distressed owner by ambulance to Sydney University Veterinary Hospital.

Gidgit will spend the night in hospital while his foot is treated.
