The Northern Territory Government has ruled out the introduction of a blanket youth curfew for Alice Springs.

Residents of the central Australian town began calling for a curfew after recurring spikes in youth crime over the summer months.

Nearly half the town's local councillors took up the fight, calling for the Alice Springs Town Council to introduce its own curfew.

During the election campaign last year, the Country Liberals said they would consider a curfew.

But Children and Families Minister Robyn Lambley has quashed the idea.

Ms Lambley says it would be expensive and resource-intensive to run, although she'd consider a temporary curfew for children if there was a crisis situation.

The local council is due to discuss the idea of a curfew again tonight, in what is expected to be a fiery debate.
