STORYLINE:

IRAN SAYS IT HAS LAUNCHED THIS MONKEY STRAPPED INTO A SEAT INTO SPACE.

THE LAUNCH BRINGS THE COUNTRY ONE STEP CLOSER TO MANNED SPACE FLIGHT.

STATE TV ANNOUNCED MONDAY THE MONKEY'S ROCKET REACHED A HEIGHT OF 72 MILES.

THE MISSION APPEARS TO BE PART OF AN AMBITIOUS SPACE PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES PLANS FOR A NEW SPACE CENTER.

BUT THE U-S AND ITS ALLIES WORRY THAT TECHNOLOGY FROM THE SPACE PROGRAM COULD ALSO BE USED TO DEVELOP LONG RANGE MISSILES THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BE ARMED WITH NUCLEAR WARHEADS.

IRAN DENIES THIS SAYING IT PLANS TO ORBIT ITS OWN SATELLITES INTO SPACE TO MONITOR NATURAL DISASTERS, IMPROVE TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND EXPAND MILITARY SURVEILLANCE.

THE REPORT GAVE NO OTHER DETAILS ON THE TIMING OR LOCATION OF THE ROCKET LAUNCH, BUT SAID THE MONKEY RETURNED TO EARTH SAFELY.
