1. File of Harkin

VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

U-S Senator Tom Harkin says he won't see re-election next year.

The five-term Democrat from Iowa says his decision frees a new generation of Iowa Democrats to seek higher office.

It also eases some of the burden Republicans face in trying to retake the Senate.

Harkin was first elected in 19-84 and says his age - he's 73 - was a factor in his decision.

He is chairman of the health, education, labor and pensions committee, and chairman of the largest appropriations subcommittee.

And perhaps his signature achievement was the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act.

He also helped shepherd the president's health care bill through.
