An assault against Victoria's former top cop was not planned, according to Tasmanian police.
A police officer in Hobart told AAP the alleged offender did not know who he was targeting.
"It was a random thing. It wasn't a planned thing," the officer said.
The Hobart Mercury reported Mr Overland fell to the ground but quickly got to his feet and restrained the assailant while his wife called the police.
He was briefly admitted to hospital for a check-up.
The alleged attacker is believed to have been charged with assault, but police were unable to confirm this on Saturday.
Mr Overland, who led the Purana taskforce investigation into Melbourne's gangland war, is now the head of Tasmania's justice department.
