The Fijian government has reversed its decision to expel an Australian Catholic priest.

Fiji's minister for immigration yesterday declared Father Kevin Barr a prohibited immigrant due to a breach in the terms and conditions of his work permit.

The immigration department gave the 76-year-old until Sunday to leave Fiji, where he has worked for more than 30 years and has a long history of social advocacy.

Father Barr claimed he was the subject of abusive communications from the interim government's prime minister, Frank Bainimarama.

However, the prime minister's office in Fiji says following representations made to Commodore Bainimarama, the decision has been reversed.
