Three Australian Special Forces soldiers have been wounded during a firefight with insurgents in Afghanistan.

The soldiers were trying to disrupt insurgent networks during a Special Operations Task Group mission in Oruzgan when they came under fire last Saturday.

One soldier suffered a gunshot wound to the hand, while another took a bullet to the lower leg.

They were treated on the spot before being evacuated separately to a medical facility at Tarin Kowt base.

Defence said in a statement the soldiers were in a "satisfactory condition" and plans were being made for their return to Australia for specialised treatment.

The third soldier also wounded during the operation was treated at the scene and made a full recovery.

The soldiers have notified their families.
