The Nurses Union says staff at Eidsvold Hospital in southern Queensland are still concerned about the future of the service, despite the Premier promising it will remain open.

A public meeting will be held in Eidsvold tonight.

The service doesn't currently have a permanent doctor, or head of nursing.

Vicki Smyth from the Queensland Nurses Union says nurses are concerned the doctor position at the hospital has only been advertised once.

"They think more attempts could be made to secure doctors," she said.

"There have been doctors working here who have expressed interest in staying on permanently ... why haven't those people been suitable?"

Dr Adam Coltzau from the Rural Doctors Association of Queensland says hospital boards can now go outside the Queensland Health recruitment program in search of staff.

"They can now go outside the box and look to more innovative ways to recruit using social media, using private external consulting companies," he said.

"I would expect that the board would take that approach of looking outside the box to try and recruit into this area."

North Burnett Mayor Don Waugh says he is relieved by Premier Campbell Newman's promise that Eidsvold Hospital won't close.

He says a public meeting will still go ahead tonight, to discuss the future of the health services in the town.

"It's been a very convoluted journey and I think there's been a lot of ins and outs and ups and downs about it but I think yes it's certainly the right decision," he said.

"What we've got to do now is make sure that we put in place a program and a plan that is going to work for Eidsvold and is going to do the best for the region as a whole."
