NSW Government crackdown on public housing rent

The New South Wales Government has announced a crackdown on people who are not paying rent in public housing blocks.

Tenants pay some rent, although it's heavily subsidised by the government.

The Community Services Minister Pru Goward says about 10-per-cent of households lie about the number of people living there in order to pay less rent.

"It's not fair, and it's not right.

"We have more than 50 thousand people on our waiting list.

"We have a shortage of money for emergency accommodation, for overnight accommodation. This additional rent helps us support other people who need housing," she said.

Ms Goward's announced a two-month amnesty during which people will not be penalised for telling the truth, and there will also be a 'dob-in' phone line for neighbours.

"Often neighbours are frightened of ringing up (the Department of) Housing for fear of reprisals.

"This give them complete anonymity and it's very easy to do.

"So, if you think one of your neighbours, who's a public housing tenant, has undeclared occupants then you are welcome to declare that and to ring the dob-in line," she said.
