AUSTRALIAN AUTHORITIES SAY ONE MAN IS DEAD AS AN ALREADY LARGE, FAST-MOVING BUSHFIRE DOUBLED IN SIZE ON FRIDAY.

MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND ACRES OF LAND ARE NOW BURNING IN THE SOUTHERN AUSTRALIAN STATE OF VICTORIA.

"The Aberfeldy fire, which has been burning now for 24 hours in the Baw Baw National Park, is 44,500 hectares in size going. And currently has already had listed that five houses have been lost."

HUNDREDS OF RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN FORCED TO EVACUATE THE AREA AS MORE THAN SEVEN HUNDRED FIREFIGHTERS MOVE IN TO CONTAIN THE BLAZE.

OFFICIALS SAY FIRES ARE BURNING ELSEWHERE IN AUSTRALIA WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN HELPED BY FRIDAY'S EXTREME TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

SYDNEY RECORDED ITS HOTTEST DAY ON RECORD ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITH TEMPERATURES PEAKING AT 114 DEGREES.
