Police are seeking information from the public after a 92-year-old man was punched during a break-in on the New South Wales Central Coast.

The man and his 90-year-old wife were confronted by a young man inside their Gosford home around 10:30pm last Thursday night.

The intruder threatened the couple with a sharp object and demanded money before punching the elderly man in the face and fleeing.

Acting Inspector Darren Deamer says although the man only suffered soft tissue damage, it is a shocking crime.

"This particular couple do suffer from a number of medical conditions and they contacted police immediately," he said.

"At this stage Gosford detectives are continuing their investigations into the incident.

"Today [we're] wanting people to come forward from the community who have any knowledge or are able to assist with what occurred on the 10th of January."

It is understood the man's injuries are not serious.
