Government threatens court action against union

The State Government is threatening a federal court injunction against the education union in an effort to stop planned industrial action.

Pay talks have broken down and teachers are threatening a 24-hour strike, a ban on extra curricular activities and a cap on the number of hours they work.

The union is seeking a 12 per cent pay rise over three years, with the government offering seven and a half per cent.

The Government says the strike will disrupt schools and greatly inconvenience families.

Education union Victorian president Meredith Peace, says the government issued the union a legal document late last night.

"We're very disappointed the government is clearly trying to seek technical ways to frustrate the union and its members, that's not good enough and its not the way to end this dispute," he said.
