Melbourne Zoo has a new addition with the long-awaited arrival of an Asian elephant calf.

After a 22-month pregnancy, Num-Oi gave birth to the male calf just before 3:00am (AEST) on Thursday.

It is her first offspring and the fourth for the zoo's bull elephant, Bong Su.

The baby weighed a healthy 131 kilos.
