Police divers will search the Nerang River at the Gold Coast today for a man who jumped into the water and failed to resurface.

At least one person witnessed the leap from the Chevron Island Bridge about 9:00pm (AEST) last night.

Police are appealing for other people who saw the incident to come forward.

They are still trying to establish the man's identity.

Officers say there have been no reports of a person missing in the area.

Police searched the river and its banks last night without success.

They will return with divers to search the river later this morning.
