The future for 75 staff at Sydney's Long Bay Jail is uncertain, after a decision to close one of the prison's oldest wings.

The Metropolitan Special Programs Centre opened in 1909 and houses about 320 maximum secutiy inmates.

Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin says he has decided to close the wing because it would require a multi-million dollar investment to bring it up to scratch.

He says a 20-year-old block at Silverwater prison will be re-opened and inmates will also be transferred to the new maximum security wing opening soon in Cessnock.
