A study by an Australian bank has ranked Launceston the country most family-friendly city due to its low crime rate, less crowded schools and affordable housing.

The study by Suncorp Bank assessed crime levels, health care, education and unemployment.

Suncorp Bank executive manager Craig Fenwick says Launceston beat Australia's 30 largest cities.

"What we've found is that Launceston in Tasmania is number one with an across-the-board scores that really outshone most other cities in Australia," he said.

"It's done really well in things like crime, education which it came first in, housing affordability as well as things like childcare and a sense of community."

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten says it is great recognition.

"It's definitely going to get people talking and wondering why there city is not number one, no doubt," he said.

"It's going to get that discussion which is good and it's going to make people obviously look and say 'well maybe we should go to Tasmania and Launceston in particular to have a look'."

Canberra claimed second place while Hobart ranked seventh.
