The Victorian opposition leader has revealed that his wife was driving a taxpayer funded car that was involved in an accident with a cyclist this month.

A teenager suffered serious injuries after he allegedly crashed into the four wheel drive at Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula on January 7.

Catherine Andrews was driving and Mr Andrews and their three children were also in the car.

The family of the injured 15 year old has expressed disappointment that the Andrew's family had not checked on the boy's condition, after he was admitted to the Royal Children's Hospital.

Mr Andrews says it was a distressing accident.

"We do need to understand that there's a Victoria police investigation into this," he said.

"It is a serious matter and they have a serious job to do and the last thing I was ever going to do was to try and speak to the young cyclist, before the police had made it clear not to speak to the family."
