Controversial concept plans for the busy Bunda Street shopping strip have been released.

Ideas for new shared zone in CBD

Three proposals for a pedestrian-cycle shared zone along Bunda Street in Civic will go on public display today.

The plans include ideas such as introducing a 10km speed limit, raising the roadway to the same level as the footpath, and building a large bicycle hub with storage to encourage bike riders into the Canberra's CBD.

The first idea by GTA Consultants is to remove the current roadway line markings and allow pedestrians, cycles and cars to navigate the shared space at low speed.

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury says the Government is keen for public comment.

"This Bunda Street project is part of the overall Civic cycle loop which seeks to link up the popular cycle paths coming down Sullivans Creek and coming into Civic from the lake on the southside," Mr Rattenbury said.

"So its part of a broader project to link up Civic for cycling but also about making the general area more attractive and more modern."

The second concept by Spackman Mossop and Michaels suggests a dedicated cycleway with a bike hub fitted out with showers, lockers and storage.

Local businesses are being encouraged to comment on the proposals as some of the plans include the removal of on-street parking.

Stephen Gregory from Canberra CBD Limited says any activity that improves Civic is welcome.

"The thing about a shared zone is that everybody has the right of way and I think that's important in a space like this," he said.

"What we're seeing in some of these designs is examples of what works in other big cities around the world."

The third design by Tract includes shared intersections paved in different material encouraging road users to slow down.

Public consultation is open until March 4 at .
