Vodafone has called time on the Crazy John's brand, signalling the end of one of Australia's best loved immigrant success stories.

Up to three hundred jobs are at risk across Australia as Vodafone decides how many staff will be made redundant or moved when dozens of stores are closed or rebranded next month.

A Vodafone spokeswoman said no decision had been made on jobs yet, but the company would do everything it could to keep as many people employed as possible.

"We plan to exit Crazy John's retail outlets on the 20 February 2013," the spokeswoman said.

"During this transition period we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for our customers and will do our best to redeploy as many Crazy John's retail employees as possible to work in one of our many Vodafone stores."

She said it was not an easy decision to make, but it was necessary to remain competitive.

The company would close or rebrand Crazy John's stores across Australia as it "streamlined" its retail brand offering to one single brand, Vodafone.

"We will continue to support our Crazy John's customers through our Vodafone stores and dealerships," she said.

Crazy John's founder John Ilhan, a Turkish immigrant whose "first love" was soccer, launched his mobile phone chain Crazy John's in 1991 and became one of Australia's wealthiest men, amassing a $310 million fortune before he died in 2007.

The following year Vodafone Australia purchased Crazy John's after reaching an agreement with the widow of Mr Ilhan.

That same year the Victorian government named the John Ilhan Memorial Reserve in Broadmeadows after Mr Ilhan.

After a series of network problems plagued Vodafone in 2010, the company has now prioritised its spending to focus on mobile coverage and fewer dropped calls.
