Dozens of fire crews are getting the upper hand on a grass and timber fire that is burning north of Canberra.

The fire is burning at Dicks Creek Road about halfway between Gundaroo and Murrumbateman in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands.

Peter Dyce from the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) says strong winds hampered earlier efforts to contain the blaze but they are now gaining the upper hand.

"At this stage we're quite confident that the fire is being contained and we downgraded our concerns to the residents to the west of the fire," he said.

"I would advise all property owners within the vicinity of this fire to remain vigilant."

The fire has burnt out approximately 25 hectares, with 20 to 30 fire units working to contain the blaze.
